Lehigh Hanson

14 process plants, one singular vision of safety.

Reliable, efficient and safe power is critical to successful operation in any process industry. But what’s also critical to Lehigh Hanson, one of the largest cement producers in North America, is its core business value. A commitment to industry-leading safety standards designed to protect its employees.

Establishing a complete vision for comprehensive arc flash safety.

Cement plants utilize a continuous pyro-processing method to produce their product, and safety is paramount when performing energized work. One area of particular concern for the industry is the hazard of arc flash—a sudden, violent explosion caused as solid copper vaporizes and expands to 67,000 times its original volume, with heat exceeding 19,000 degrees Celsius.

While addressing the many regulations and standards defined to protect personnel and equipment from this threat, Lehigh Hanson was committed to developing and implementing a comprehensive arc flash compliance program across all 14 of its plants. And they looked for a partner in electrical power management solutions who had a similar, comprehensive focus on safety.

Putting global engineering expertise to work across multi-site operations.

Eaton’s expertise, global engineering services and extensive experience in mining were the ideal springboards for this ambitious project. And it inspired us to leverage our multi-site power system and arc flash expertise in a bold new way.

We unleashed our power systems engineers for both site work and system studies. Field-based engineers collected site data. Our experience ensured all of the essential information was gathered efficiently, accurately and in a single visit. A centralized engineering group conducted power systems studies and made recommendations to reduce arc flash hazards in one “systematized,” consistent report.

This journey to improved electrical safety yielded significant dividends. Each Lehigh Hanson plant now has a clear actionable plan to reduce electrical hazards and improve operational efficiency. Electrical system documentation enables improved power systems management, generating an improved bottom line.

Thanks to Eaton, Lehigh Hanson can look beyond compliance. And enjoy a vision of a workplace that truly puts safety first.
